Profile
Hawa Mahal (Hindi: हवा महल), located in Jaipur, India, was built in 1799 and designed by Lal Chand Ustaad. Its distinctive five-story exterior features 953 small windows, resembling honeycombs. The design was intended to allow the royal ladies to observe the streets below without being seen by people outside, as they were required to adhere to strict veiling rules. Hawa Mahal is constructed using red and pink sandstone and is situated on the main thoroughfare of Jaipur’s commercial center. It is part of the urban palaces of Jaipur, extending into the harem where the women resided. It appears particularly magnificent in the golden light of early morning sunrise.
